Serve Session 5: What Trumps Serving

ALL TO ACTIONIn this second session on diakoneo, we look at what is viewed in Scripture as more important than serving others.

As you view the video, consider the following questions:

1. Do you tend to get more irritable when serving others having not spent time with Jesus? Can you tell a difference in your spirit when you serve others after having spent time with him?

2. What do you feel more gifted in: preaching of the Word or serving practical needs? In considering the example in Acts 7, how can you use this model to keep the priority of the Word of utmost importance while still valuing the critical work of serving?

3. Do you know your spiritual gift(s)? How are you using it(them) to serve others as referenced in 1 Peter 4:10-11?

Serve Session 4: Serving Others

This is our first session on diakoneo, or serving in the area of ministering to the practical needs of others.  In today’s session, we’ll look at both the importance of serving others and how Jesus taught us to go beyond serving.

As you view the video, consider the following questions:

1. Why do you think Jesus placed such an emphasis on serving others?

2. Do we sometimes get so caught up in serving others that we miss the “follow Jesus” part?

3. What part of what the Scripture says about following Jesus challenged you today?

I referenced much Scripture today.  Here is a list if you want to look it up in your further study:

Matthew 20:25-28, Mark 15:41, John 12:26, Matthew 25:35-40, Matthew 8:18-20, Luke 9:59-62, Matthew 16:24, Matthew 19:21, John 10:27, John 21:22, Matthew 19:29-30.

The next lesson will be on what “trumps” serving others according to Scripture.

Serve Session 3 (Freed to Serve God, Not Idols)

In this last session of Serving God, we see that the Israelites were freed from their bondage to serve God.  We also see how quickly they fell into serving something other than God.  We can fall into the same trap.  As you view this week’s lesson, consider the questions below.  Next week we will begin our study about Serving Others. (Need to catch up? View Session 1 here and Session 2 here.)

1. As a believer, you have been rescued from bondage, perhaps many different types of bondage.  Do you ever find yourself “looking back?”

2. What do you go to for comfort? What does your heart cling to? What controls you?  Could you be serving that rather than serving God?

3. What signs from God do you have a tendency to elevate?

4. Are there any idols in your life?

Serve Session 2 (What Serving God Looks Like and the Results of the Proper “Serve”)

In Session 2, we look at specific examples in the New Testament of what serving God looked like.  We also see what our lives will look like when we’re serving God with our whole hearts.  To view Session 1, click here.

Because this is a little longer session, here are some basic review questions to help recap the session and pray about where God may be speaking to you:

1. Am I purposefully spending time in the presence of God?
2. Is God leading me to “fast” or give something up for a period of time in order to lead me to prayer?
3. Have I been depending on my past successes, failures, or unique experiences to serve God, when all he wants is my whole heart devoted to him? Do I truly understand that Jesus in me is enough?
4. Does my life exhibit the results of the proper serve as mentioned?  Do I recognize Jesus? Am I grateful? Do I speak of God to others?
5. Are there areas in my life that do not line up with Hebrews 13?
6. What phrases in Revelation 7 comfort me at this moment in my life?
